How we research and update our guides

Last updated October 4, 2026

Renters insurance decisions involve real money, so we hold every page to a few simple rules.

We cite what we state

Every average cost, legal requirement and coverage rule comes from a source we opened and read, and each page lists its sources at the bottom. We prefer, in order: state insurance departments and laws, insurers' own policy documents and pages, and published rate studies from independent publishers.

We don't guess

If we can't verify a number, we leave it out or describe it as a typical range. We don't invent statistics, laws, company policies or customer stories.

Averages are a guide, not a quote

Rate studies use different sample policies, so two sources can give different averages for the same state. We name the source next to each figure. Your own price depends on your address, coverage amounts, deductible and history.

We update pages

Each page shows the date it was last updated. We review cost figures when major rate studies are republished, and update pages when laws or insurer availability change.
