Why I built AptCover
I'm Venkata Nagredi. I moved to the United States as an immigrant and have rented homes here for more than ten years. In that time I learned renters insurance the hard way: confusing policies when buying, not knowing what was actually covered, and claims that were harder than they should have been.
AptCover is the guide I wish I'd had. It explains renters insurance in plain language, state by state, so you can choose coverage with confidence and know what to expect if you ever need to file a claim.
What you'll find here
- State guides with the average cost, what the law says, and the local risks a standard policy does and doesn't cover.
- Plain-language guides to the questions renters actually ask: what it costs, what it covers, whether your landlord can require it, and how to file a claim.
How we research
Every cost figure, law and coverage rule on this site comes from a source we opened and read: published rate studies, insurers' own policy pages, and state insurance departments. Sources are listed at the bottom of every page. When we can't verify something, we say so rather than guess. Read the full editorial policy.
How AptCover makes money
Some links on this site are affiliate links. If you buy a policy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That never changes what a guide says: we explain what isn't covered as plainly as what is. Details are in our affiliate disclosure.
What AptCover isn't
AptCover is not an insurance company, agent or broker, and it doesn't give legal or financial advice. Coverage and prices vary by policy and by insurer, so always check your own policy documents.
